Good Night, Little Sea Otter by Janet Halfmann Book Review

Another great children's book written by Janet Halfmann is the best way to sum up Good Night, Little Sea Otter. Janet's books are engaging since they center around wildlife which most children enjoy. Little Otter is a story of a cute little otter who is about to go to sleep. Little Otter, like many children, don't always want to go fast to sleep and are clever with finding ways to stay up a little later.

The illustrations by Wish Williams are equally impressive and also entertain the children as they hear the story of Little Otter. Both my girls listened intently and smiled at the illustrations. It was a delightful little tale and ideal for bedtime since it wasn't too long.

Overall, we enjoyed Good Night, Little Sea Otter and would definitely recommend it for anyone with children. The suggested ages were 3 to 6 but even my 7 year old enjoyed the story. Priced at only $5.95, it would even make a great stocking stuffer or a book swap for Christmas gift giving.

America The Story of Us: An Illustrated History by Kevin Baker Review

Have you had a chance to watch the History channel and view America The Story of Us? I have and loved it and when I was provided an opportunity to receive a complimentary copy, I was more than happy to read and provide my thoughts. The author, Kevin Baker, wrote this great supplement to the History channel special that chronicles the United States from colonial settlement to modern day.

The book is broken down into 12 chapters with numerous illustrations supporting the stories. The illustrations range from drawings to photos from objects to maps and so much more. The illustrations were a treasure to this book given how much it added to the entire book. The insightful stories provided an almost first hand account of what it must have been liked to have been in some of the situations described along the way.

This is 400 page powerhouse follows the series along thus reinforcing what the viewer watched if for educational reasons or just for pleasure. America The Story of Us: An Illustrated History is perfect for the novice or historical buff. My favorite chapter was on WWII and I particularly liked seeing an actual copy of Roosevelt's address to Congress. There is a final section for extended reading should the reader like to find additional information to supplement the book.

Overall, I would recommend this book as an educational aid or just for pleasure. Very well written, informative, factual and excellent complimentary illustrations that keep you wanting more.

Fur and Feathers by Janet Halfmann Book Review

In this complimentary delightful e-Book that I had a chance to review, I found another great example of how author, Janet Halfmann, can make learning fun with the use of animals. Janet captures the magic of animals in such detail that it brings them into a whole new light. I always enjoy reading the books by Janet and can't wait to read them to my daughters. In Fur and Feathers, Sophia has a dream of great winds whisking the fur and feathers off all her animal friends. Faced with what to do for these helpless animals, Sophia's creativity uncovers beautiful new ways to cover her friends and teaches a great lesson on sharing, giving and helping others.

Another great feature of Janet's books end with a learning experience for children. For Creative Minds further challenges children to learn in a fun way with four pages of fun learning activities at the back of the book.

This book is recommended for ages 4-9 and is published by SylvanDellPublishing..

The Review

I received a complimentary advance copy of Dear Baby It's a Colorful World by Carol Casey. The jacket cover of this perfectly sized hard back book was full of bright colors and included a multi-cultural cast of children. The colors used are perfect to stimulate and peak a little one's curiousity.

I may be one of those old fashion type but I like my little children's books to rhyme and this one does a perfect job. I love to be able to read to my children with a whimsical type voice and when the words go together, it makes it more fun.

Here is an example:

I'm ready to go,

my eyes open wide.

A colorful world is

waiting inside!

It's chalked full of bright colors, familar shapes and fun pictures. Each set of pages consists of a different scenes with this host of cute characters.

Another great feature is the back page that allows for those that read the book to the child to sign. This is a great memory to have as the child turns into an adult and hands over to his own child.

I would definitely recommend this wonderful and colorful book to any parent and if you don't have children, it would make an ideal gift!

About the Author

Carol Casey began her writing career in Chicgao as a news writer and editor. Over the past 15 years she has worked with women's and children's charities in the areas of fundraising, media and event planning. She has two children and a grandchild and lives in Atlanta with her husband. This is Carol's third collaboration with illustrator Jason Oransky.

Jason Oransky is a lead graphic artist for Carter Clothes, Inc. He is an avaid Florida Sate alumni and lives in Atlanta. Jason is an active participant in an Atlanta Big Brother mentoring program. He has illustrated for three Dear Baby books.

The Review:
Dinosaurs on the Move is a book full of movable paper figures that can be cut, colored and assembled for hours of fun. The creativity allowed in this book is a great resource for not only educating children on the various types of dinosaurs but it allows them to decide how they want them to look. What I liked about this book is it's arranged by a table of contents listing each dinosaur, the page to find the cut out and a list of facts for each dinosaur. Children will not only practice small motor skills by coloring and cutting but they get to learn at the same time.

The author provides detailed instructions on how to construct the movable dinosaurs with tips even for smaller children. My daughter loved the book as she is interested in dinosaurs right now and coupled with her creativity, this was ideal for her.

The author, Cathy Diez-Luckie, brought these ten dinosaurs to live with her engaging ability to entertain and teach. Her art has appeared nationally and internationally in numerous illustrated reference books, children's books and magazines. The illustrations are alluring to children with the bold, colorful patterns of the dinosaurs. The ability to fasten them to allow for movement was a hit with both my girls.

I would recommend this book for any child interested in dinosaurs or one that enjoys creativity and the ability to make things. Both my girls enjoyed the book and couldn't put it down.

This was an interesting book detailing three primary events that led up to the start of WWII. Mr. Hance's thirty years of experience studying World War II provided the necessary background to write such a comprehensive book on the war. What started out as a mission to determine what started WWII, he began the journey that led him back to WWI and this book.

What he found was that WWII started because of WWI, the Franco-Prussian War and the Treaty of Versailles. All three events are covered with great detail that exemplified his knowledge on the subject matter. The inclusion of countless number of documents brings the history to life by giving the reader a first hand account of what transpired.

I would recommend this book for history buffs especially those that want to learn more about the starting events of WWII.

A Most Vivid Day by Justin Young

A Most Vivid Day by Justin Young is a delightful book about a little black bat who encounters colors for the first time. The author, Justin Young, takes an interesting spin on life as a bat and how they don't see colors due to their sleep habits. It's a great story filled with new revelations, greedy animals and initiative to teach a valuable lesson. This isn't your ordinary children's book and was very entertaining. The illustrations are colorful and beautiful and capture the attention of all ages.

Justin Young studied fine art and printmaking in Seoul and eventually moved to New York study to study toy design. He now resides in California and has worked as a fine artist, graphic designer, photographer and illustrator.

I would recommend A Vivid Day for the creativeness of turning something like a sunrise into such a fun experience with children. Mr. Young has a very creative imagination to write such a fun book with equally wonderful illustrations to accompany it. It's truly a must have!

This Little Prayer of Mine by Anthony DeStefano

I don't go to church and I know I should as I don't want to repeat my upbringing. My dad, growing up as a devout Catholic, decided he didn't want to force religion on us and thought we would choose one. As he always says, he didn't realize we would choose none. If you aren't given the chance to explore, you tend to gravitate that way. When I was offered the chance to review This Little Prayer Book of Mine, I wanted it for my kids.

This Little Prayer of Mine was written by Anthony DeStefano and illustrated by Mark Elliott. It's even endorsed by the National Day of Prayer. It's a delightful book by Random House that allows early readers a chance to read it or to have a parent read to them. I like the real life examples used such as:

Whenever I feel really scared and want to hide my head, please help me to be brave and strong and face my fears instead.

It teaches such good lessons while reinforcing God is present. My girls really like this movie and is becoming a nightly ritual.

Books are such a wonderful tool for teaching children and every now and then, you can find a book that not only teaches but thoroughly entertains. aMomEntrepreneur gave me the opportunity to receive and review a complimentary copy of Zoo Babies by Accord Publishing. What makes this book unique is it's a mini animotion book. Each page provides an animotion of the animal as the page turns! It's almost like a mini TV in the book.

My girls fought over the book at first as they love the animotion feature, they love zoos and they love baby animals so who can blame them? The book is very appealing because it's small for little hands to hold and turn pages without effort. The illustrations are bright and vibrant and we know kids love that. The words are simple so my kindergartener can read to her sister and that creates a double bonus.

Beyond Band of Brothers Book Review

If you have not seen Band of Brothers yet, you need to see it and then afterwards, read the book by Major Dick Winters of his memoirs titled Beyond Band of Brothers. This is an amazing book by an amazing hero and great leader of Easy Company. I finally broke down and watched the HBO series that involved the book by Stephen Ambrose.

I immediately fell in love with the actor who played Dick Winters, Damian Lewis. I thought about what made him so special and it was a compilation of many factors: modesty, leadership, goodness, morality and I could probably keep going. The book explains many moments in the movie along with a lot of Major Winter's thoughts and emotions he endured during the time before the war and afterwards. He puts such an emotional side to each of the main soldiers from the series that I was wanting more.

Easy Company was one of many companys that fought during WW2 but they were showcased in this book given their valor, heroic efforts and stories told. They were usually the forerunners in most of the main battles. Reading about Speirs, Sobel, Lipton and others really brought the reality of the HBO show to the book.

Major Dick Winters, now 92, is an inspiration for anyone. This is a must read book coupled with the book or HBO series Band of Brothers to see what these great men endured and sacrificed for our freedom today. Major Winters was the third commanding officer of Easy Company.

*About Band of Brothers:

"Band of Brothers" was originally a non-fiction account of the adventures of Easy Company, 506th PIR, during the Second World War. The author, Stephen E. Ambrose, has close ties with these veterans. In 2002, "Band of Brothers" became a TV 10 episode miniseries that was broadcasted on HBO for a couple of weeks. The series was directed by Stephen Spielberg and Tom Hanks, with Stephen Ambrose as an executive co-producer.

*About Easy Company:

Easy Company, 506th, was unarguably the best company of the 2nd battalion of the 506th. Their original CO (Commanding Officer), Captain Herbert Sobel, was replaced by Lieutenant Meehan. During the D-Day invasion, Lieutenant Meehan's plane was shot down, and Lieutenant Winters took command.

Easy's training begain at Camp Toccoa in Georgia at the foot of Currahee Mountain in 1942 under the command of Captain Herbert Sobel. It was here that the men would learn the discipline, gain the conditioning and skills that made Easy one of the best comanies in the 506th.

After their training at Toccoa was complete, the company was moved by train to New York City and then to England by way of a British steamer, the S.S. Samaria in 1943. There they would receive more combat training in Aldeborne for the next nine months.

Captain Sobel would be transferred back to the States and 1st Lieutenant Thomas Meehan would take over as leader of Easy.

On June 5, 1944, the C-47s carrying paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne, including Easy Company took off from the airfield at Upottery where they would drop behind enemy lines in the early morning hours of June 6, 1944 as D-Day or Operation Overlord began.

During the drop into Normandy, Lt. Meehan's plane was shot down. It was at this time that then Lt. Richard Winters would take over as CO of Easy Company.

Throughout the European campaign, Easy Company has participated in some of the major battles known to mankind. It performed a key task during D-Day (eliminating 4 German 105mm cannons aimed at Utah Beach), it spearheaded the Allied offensive, participated in Operation Market Garden, it held the line at the Battle of the Bulge in Bastogne, when the 101st Airborne was surrounded and cut off by Germans, no matter how thin it was. It saw the horrific sight of the Jews and ethnic minorities imprisoned in labor camps. It was the first company to enter Berchesgaden and Hitler's famous "Eagle's Nest

By the end of the war, Easy had been assigned occupational duties in Zell am See, Austria where they began training to be redeployed to the Pacific war, but the war ended in 1945. With the war over, the men were allowed to return home and in 1945, the 506th was decommissioned, including E-Company.

The Taylors' Civil War by Lowell F. Volk is set in Virginia and chronicles the trials and tribulations of a southern family, the Taylors, during the Civil War. It is a classic revenge book with action packed events that captured my attention and captivated me to finish reading it quickly. Although it was predictable at times and short, it had drama, love, action and suspense.

The Taylors were a family who only wanted to live their lives and be farmers. While they were supportive of the military during the War, further events such as the murder of their son and events post the War tested their patriotism and their own will.

I recommend this book for anyone interested in story that is well written and articulated with accuracy to the period and characters in which it takes place.

Lowell F. Volk, a native of Minnesota, has already finished the sequel to this book and has begun writing his third of a series of five books planned for the Civil War period. Mr. Volk is retired and resides in Colorado where is a member of the Montezuma County Sheriff's Posse. Mr. Volk and his wife have five children.

Little Black Ant on Park Street is a fact filled story of the life of an ant and how an ant is able to find her way back to the colony. Janet provides the little reader with a glimpse of what it's like being an ant from searching for food, communicating with one another and how they sense their way around. The story provides the educational while offering an enteratining story of the main character.

I think it's a wonderful book for those children that like to understand more about biology and especially bugs. Janet does a superb job in the details of an ant's life while maintaining a fun character for children to get to know. The back of the book includes more information about ants, a glossary and points of interests.

The illustrations by Kathleen Rietz are beautiful and vibrant and add to the story. Simple things such as incorporating the ants retrieval of nectar from aphids is a wonderful way to teach children more about ants. Little Black Ant on Park Street is part of Soundprints: Smithsonian Institute and was just released this January.

This is not another book based on minimal research or backed by some nutritional health company. This is full of first hand knowledge, research and experience. With Dr. Sears' Prime Time Plan, you will feel better, perhaps live longer and can help promote wellness among everyone in your circle.

I highly recommend this book for better health and a chance to turn around your wellness at all ages.

All relationships suffer from communication issues but marriages, in particular, appear to suffer greatly from this. Dr. Eggerich's book, Love and Respect, was the first book I read from him. For me, it was a real eye opener on explaining the different communication styles between men and women. What women say and men hear and vice versa was true to form but being able to read about the oppositve sex really allowed me a different perspective on my own marriage.

The basic rules still apply that husband's view their wive's actions as being disrespectful while women react to not getting the love they want. It's a vicious cycle that has to be broken in order to enjoy the fruits of marriage. Real life excerpts also helps to show how practicing to avoid the "crazy cycle" also adds credibility to the ideas touted in this book. Where the books makes complete logical sense, it also shows how hard it is to break that cycle which is why I think the book is good because it's not one of those, 'read me, follow it and all is perfect.'

It's a very practical book that needs to be reread frequently to reinforce the teachings. I would recommend it to anyone in a relationship as it really does provide helpful insight in understanding the rational behind the actions of the opposite sex.

The Sweet By and By is about a woman, Jade, who is still reliving events of her past. After being away from her childhood life for a decade, she's about to marry Max Benson. Her experiences past college has led to a successful career and a new life.

In spite of trying to rise above and move forward especially with her upcoming marriage, she finds it's not as easy to do when her hippie mother, Beryl, and wild-child younger sister arrives for the wedding. Throughout the story, the reader catches glimpses of the life she's trying to forget which allows a basis for the story. This Christian fictional novel touches on the need to forgive which is always a message anyone can use. Even though Jade vows to leave the past in the past with her Fiance, she struggles throughout the story with fullfilling that promise.

The chapters flowed well and were not too long. It was an easy to read book with great descriptive characters. I particularly enjoyed reading how Sara and Rachel made God a character in the book. The book is laced with possible lessons to learn and most likely, the reader will be able to relate to portions of the story with dysfunctional families. I also liked the section Reading Group Guide that allows you to explore the book's message in greater depth from certain chapter experiences.

Overall, I would recommend this heart warming book especially for women and more particularly, women who can relate to a troubled upbringing with less than stellar parents.

My Review:

100 Places in Italy Every Woman Should Go is an excellent written guide to not only women but any travel lover and especially one that has a passion for Italy. The book is broken up to include the not so famous landmarks and places to see which is a nice deviation to the usual tourist areas. What I also liked about the book is the places of interest that can be found on the web. Susan places the website address sideways on the edge of the applicable pages. She also advises the best times to visit to avoid crowds which for me, is a huge bonus to the guide.

The historical facts behind the recommended places is also very interesting. For instance, the section on Italian shoes and how Salvatore Ferrabamo became the grandpapa of modern Italian shoe fashion. The extra time Susan put forward in explaining the significance of these attractions adds to the allure. Susan even goes off the usual beaten touristy attractions to recommend places such as painting masks in Venice or create jewelry in Cortona.

The size is perfect and easy to carry on the plane for planning as well as in a purse or small carrying bag for your glorious vacation in Italy. There's even a great page of resources.

This is an excellent, inspiring book for the novice traveler all the way to the seasoned traveler heading to Italy. If you want to plan the perfect holiday, desire the chance to step off the beaten path and make profound memories, pick up a copy of 100 Places in Italy Every Woman Should Go by Susan Van Allen as you won't be disappointed.

About the Author:

Susan Van Allen's love for Italy began from her time spent with her maternal grandparents. They emigrated from Southern Italy and brought along the same traditions they had in Italy thus allowing Susan to be wrapped up in life the Italian way. She was born in Newark, New Jersey and took her first trip to Italy in 1976. After spending the following years visiting Italy, she was able to write this great book.

Imagine a witch needing help to regain her flying powers from a scarecrow and you have this delightful children's story by author Blume J. Rifken. Tally, who is a good witch, lost her power to fly and needs the help of Scarecrow to regain those powers. Scarecrow met Tally at Halloween when she granted him a wish. Tally grants many wishes and forgot that the very thing that gave her happiness could take away her abilities to fly. Unknown to them, Scarecrow has a plan and the story gives the little ones a chance to see a true form of friendship and the rewarding outcome of helping one another.

This is a heartwarming story about friendship and teamwork. It is a great read anytime but particularly a good choice during the fall. Both my girls were delighted as I read the story to them and they enjoyed the illustrations by Carl Wenzel.

The author, Blume J. Rifken, is a former fashion illustrator and is the author of Silhouettes in America, 1790-1840: A Collector's Guide. Scarecrow Finds a Friend was her first book inspired by her two grandchildren.

The Runt Farm series is a series of middle readers designated for children ages 6 to 10. The animals make up a non-traditional family members of orphans and those that get added along the way. This is a delightful book and my six year old has thoroughly enjoyed it. She's even trying to read it on her own with difficulty but in time, she'll pick it right up. She loves animals so this book is an excellent resource for her interestes as well as the ability it has to strengthen her vocabulary through playful bantor with the characters. The illustrations by Mark Evan Walker are perfectly placed to keep her interest and many times she laughed. She really enjoyed it!

Q: Why did you write the Runt Farm books?

AL: For the love of telling and writing stories, mostly. But the books also happen to offer an inclusive view of family, and insight into the universal nature of family bonds. We need family, we make family wherever we go, whoever we are. And in one way or another, we’re all runts. Everyone has quirks. But when we find our true place and our true people, those people are our family. At Runt Farm we embrace the runt in everyone, in every species.

Q: Tell us about your first new books in the Runt Farm series!

AL: The Runt Farm books are snappy illustrated chapter books for children that feature an upbeat multi-species cast of animal characters, some evil villains, and assorted stories of scrapes and escapes.

Q: Who are the main characters?

AL: Oh, there’s rebellious but laid-back Kitten and his pal The Peep (a baby duck with some issues). Then there are Cletus and Tooth – two extra-smart refugee mice. Next comes a rambunctious bunny named Beatrice, and then Blossom – a squirrel guy with a flashy style—these two have a healthy dose of sibling rivalry going. And in Book 3 we meet Clovis; she’s a mouse cousin to Tooth. Clovis is a sort of nervous and distracted auntie type, a serious artist who delights in capturing the light.

Q: And the villains?

AL: You would be referring to the weasels, of course! And the evil agents of NAARF.

Q: NAARF?

AL: Oh yes -- the Nightshade Association Animal Research Facility. They will stop at nothing to capture those escapees, Cletus, Tooth and Clovis.

Q: Where do you get the ideas for the Runt Farm stories?

AL: Well some of them come from real life. In Runt Farm Book 2, Beatrice and Blossom, Beatrice cheats Blossom out of all his marbles using phony rules like “rainbows.” She also uses a steelie as a shooter, a questionable tactic if ever there was one. When I was 6 or 7 the Canaday brothers, down the block from me, got all my marbles just like that.

Q: Were you able to get your marbles back?

AL: Yes, most of them. Mrs. Canaday got it all straightened out.

Q: You’re known for wearing funny hats. What is it you enjoy most about them?

AL: You think my hat is funny? Well! Indeed! Actually this particular hat is for special occasions, but the hat I wear most often is a bowler. It was my Dad’s hat, and I wear it to remember him. Mostly I just think hats are fun. You can tell a lot about a person by their hat.

Q: Amanda Lorenzo, aren’t you also known as the Seattle Mystery Lady?

AL: Apparently I am. There seems to be a video of me on YouTube called “Seattle Mystery Lady Spotted.” And a Google map showing some of my whereabouts as well. I guess I’m being watched!

Q: How long does it take you to write a book?

AL: The writing usually goes pretty quickly, perhaps a few weeks. Getting from there to a real book in your hands takes much longer, though. More like two years!

Q: Why does it take so long?

AL: Well, after I write the story, my editor makes suggestions, we argue a little (we’re friendly about it). Then I do what she says. Next our illustrator, Mark, does a bunch of tiny little drawings called thumbnails and we all ooh and aah and give feedback about them (Mark’s a really good artist). That leads to more and bigger sketches, and then final artwork. Then the book designer takes it all and mashes it together and there’s more ooh-ing and aah-ing. Then all the pages of the book get printed out and the proofreader marks in red ink where we made mistakes. After that all the mistakes get fixed and the book printer takes it from there (They print and bind the books).

Sometimes when I visit classrooms I show examples of a book in all those stages.

Q: Are your characters like anyone you know?

AL: Yes, they sure are. Cletus is a lot like me – he likes cheese and is good with tools. Beatrice and I are pretty similar, too, because I can be kind of bossy (and also brave). Tooth is similar to a famous chef whose name is Julia. Every character is partly created from different people I know and partly just made up.

Tuesday's with Morrie

I was lent this book by a dear friend who has overcome a serious illness and she found it inspiring. This is a non-fiction novel by US author Mitch Albom published in 1997. The book tells the story of Professor Morrie Schwartz who is dying from Lou Gehrig's disease and meets with former student Mitch to discuss lessons about life.

The book has frequent flashbacks from Mitch's time as a student to his weekly meetings with Morrie. They discuss issues such as acceptance, communication, love, happiness and the importance of openness. Schwartz struggles with the deterioration of his condition and constantly refers to "When you're in bed, you're dead" which symbolises the end.

The book was made into a film staring Hank Azaria as Mitch and Jack Lemmon as Morrie in 1999. The file won four Emmy awards, a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award.

I would highly recommend this book as an inspiration to anyone who perhaps doubts life and all it has to offer and turns what many would consider a negative into a positive.

I received THE FALL LINE: A Tale of Old Jamestown to review as a member of the Dorrance Review Team. THE FALL LINE: A Tale of Old Jamestown by Errol Burland, is set in the 1600's that details the lives of Lyn Duke, John Grey and Nat Bacon who uproot from Suffolk, England in 1660 to Virginia. Lyn and Nathanial are neighbors who marry and take along their good friend John to this fertile, dangerous new land. The destiny sought by these three is one of peace and comfort but due to the early age of this colony, fights among Indians and other conflicts thrown their way, they quickly learn it's not all they dreamed of.

The characters are well developed and include Nat's cousin, an affluent tobacco plantation owner, who welcomes the three to Virginia. Along the way they meet and befriend other influential men and learn that a deep seeded divide is approaching. The two factions, the Green Spring and the Ring divide the colony and force the emigants to choose. Nat chooses the group that opposes the governor which is in direct conflict to his cousin who has significant ties to the governor. The story details Nat's bestowed appointment to lead the Ring against the Indians and then against the Green Spring to the eventual charge of being a traitor to the King of England.

Nat becomes knowns as General Bacon and thus the story details Bacon's Rebellion. It's a detailed, engrossing depiction of the political strife that was wide spread in colonial Virginia through the eyes of a few. One ends up feeling remorse for Lyn who loses so much on this path that turned out much different than expected.

The author, Errol Burland, definitely set the book up with dysfunctional families which adds to the ability to relate and sympathize with the characters:

“I tried to bring a lot of what I learned about dysfunctional families into the book,” says Burland. “I certainly learned a lot of psychology. I worked with a lot of psychologists and therapists, wonderful people.” After completing the research phase of the book, Burland began assembling the stories that had been simmering in her mind. “I generally work in the afternoon. I like to clear the day, take care of all the business, and hopefully get some exercise and have a clean mind and just sit down and write, whether I want to or not.”

I recommend this book to anyone who likes historical novels given the great historical detail present as well as seeing the human component suffered during war and conflict. It's a great book!

Little Skink's Tail Book Review by Janet Halfmann

This is truly a delightful book after having a chance to read it to my girls. The illustrations are bright and colorful and the story is fun yet educational. Little Skink takes his little audience on a journey among many different animals to find a new tail. The way Ms. Halfmann presents Little Skink's path is interesting, playful and fun. I like how Ms. Halfmann utilizes the story to teach children about animals and the various tails each one has. Seeing how Little Skink and his tail are involved in this tale of pursuit is sure to captivate any child. Laurie Allen Klein's illustrations really piece the whole story together. I think it will also increase imagination as the children might try to imagine themselves with a different tail just as Little Skink does.

Ms. Halfmann has been writing children's books for more than 20 years. Little Skink's Tail is her 28th book. This book was dedicated to her granddaughter which makes it even more speical. Ms. Halfmann used to be a manager, editor and writer of coloring and activity books for Golden Books so she has plenty of experience on what children like.

The back of Little Skink's Tail has three pages dedicated "for creative minds." Once you purchase the book, the pages can also be photocopied or downloaded for use.

Janie Suss is the author of this intimate introduction to two Ospreys she named Oscar and Olive Osprey. The book is full of real time facts about Ospreys and provides a wonderful resource if you want to understand the day to day lives of Ospreys. Ms. Suss does a superb job in explaining what it takes to attract this type of bird and her indepth portrayal touches a personal level as it's like a journal from a person who learned by practice. Straight from her pier in the Chesapeake Bay, you will get great details like Oscar and Olive's son being proud of his sister's ability to catch fish or when the two didn't come home to the next any longer to eat.

I find the educational portion of the book a great resource to those interested in birds since it covers many facts such as habitat, migration, predators and more. There are over 50 color photographs which adds to the value of the educational and entertainement aspect of Oscar and Olive Osprey. Some of the younger might get overwhelmed with the facts and details of Ospreys and habitats but it sets a firm foundation for the rest of the delightful story. I like how Ms. Suss puts the story element behind the birds and their offsprings which should capture the interest of those wanting to know more about birds or wildlife. My youngest are 2 and 6 and I hope in a few years, they might be more interested in learning more about birds as this book will be waiting.

They use practicum experiences, personal experiences and scripture to assist the reader in understanding pain, how to deal with pain and how to overcome pain. Although the message may not be different from other like books, I found it a great way to connect to the reader and how psychologists could utilize more Biblical teachings and faith to overcome many of life's issues.

I particularly liked reading the personal experiences such as the one doctor's story of the passing of his ready mother's desire to go home to heaven. He prayed at the final moment wishing her to awake from her coma to say his final goodbye. The story was truly touching and exemplified the power of faith and prayer.

This book is good for anyone but particularly, those that are new in finding their faith, those that have doubts in faith and those struggling to overcome any type of pain. It is well written and easy to understand. It's not overly done in scriptures to where the average person can easily understand while provoking a desire to become a Christian or better yet, a greater Christian. This is a book that I will retain and read again as well as give as a gift.

Bear Portraits by Jill Greenberg is a delightful book full of glorious, almost unbelievable, portraits of all sorts of bears. I was lucky to receive a copy of this amazing book by Hachette Book Group and my membership with The Product Review Place.

Jill Greenberg has been an avid photographer since the age of 10 where she would stage photographs and create characters using various mediums. Jill's ability to take creative, fun, serious, touching and emotional evoking portraits is the secret to her success.

As soon as I opened the box to view the book, I was in awe and immediately ran over to my two girls and sat them down to review it with me. They were beyond happy and were elated in seeing all these amazing portraits. Some of the poses were so unreal; they appeared to be more like stuffed animals or drawings. She truly is an astounding photographer to be able to capture the unique essence of these miraculous animals in various poses.

They both went "ohhhh" and "ahhhhh" over the baby cubs and my two year old particularly loved the cub drinking from a "ba-ba." I'm not sure what was more fun, seeing the various bears in their most adorable, but some scary poses or watching the girl's obvious fascination and adoration to this great book.

At first, my two year old was not afraid of the growling bears that are in some of the portraits but later she was. It wasn't anything I would be concerned with as once I talked to her about it and joked, she came around and wasn't scared. In fact, she started to imitate him. Unfortunately, I didn't get any pictures today with my six year old since she's in school.

A special bonus in the back of the book contains all the bear's names which is so cute for little kids to see that each has their own name.

I would highly recommend this book to an animal lover, a photographer, a nature admirer or anyone with kids. This is a great way to see bears in a completely different light.

Chocolate A Love Story is a collection of 65 chocolate dessert recipes from Max Brenner's private collection. Max Brenner, at an early age of 10, read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and decided from that point forward, he was going to find a river of chocolate.

Max has locations in Philadelphia, New York City, Australia, Phillipines, Singapore and Israel and there are many products available at his online shop HERE. One product that Max is known for is the "Hug Mug" which is a coffee mug shaped to keep your hands warm. In NYC and Philadelphia, this is a great idea! If you are looking for a great gift with a chocolate or indulgence theme, this is your spot.

What I enjoyed the most about Chocolate A Love Story was Max's inclusion of himself into the various pages of this creative book. The artist, Yontan Factor, provides an interesting and unique perspective to introducing art into this clever display of mouthwatering chocolate creations. I have to admit, my first impression was one of confusion as I couldn't understand how this was a recipe book but after opening my mind, reading personally about Max and the artist, finally each recipe, I quickly fell in love with the concept of the book. I feel this would be a great gift to any chocolate lover, a chef, a novice or even as a romantic gift. This is not your run of the mill cookbooks as it's a piece of art on many levels from this chocolate genius.

I believe by reading Max's path towards his reality of bringing his chocolate to life, one can understand the passion behind the book, the recipes and the man himself.

"On the one hand, it is the most romantic gift; on the other hand, a commodity that is traded in the bourse. It is sold like precious jewelry that is picked carefully from a crystal glass, but also is an addictive snack in every corner kiosk. It is tasted like a fine wine and licked straight from the bowl...These diverse aspects of chocolate and of life are the inspiration for our book."

The entire book if filled with mouth watering enticements which made me want to try nearly all of them. One thing to note, they are not all easy recipes and are involving with a variety of ingredients and a few steps but well worth it! This is a great way to either indulge yourself or someone else.

I tried the Belgian Street Waffles and loved them! I had to buy a few extra ingredients that I don't normally have on hand but most recipes are like that unless you are already a master chef. The bonus I like about Chocolate A Love Story is that Max describes how to display your own masterpiece on the plate for the final touch.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to cook and who likes chocolate. This makes a great table book or an addition to the recipe book collection. It's a beautiful display of creativity coupled with delicious recipes.

I recently received a copy of the cookbook titled How to Roast a Lamb - New Greek Classic Cooking by Michael Psilakis (Author) and Barbara Kafka (Forward) from Hachette Book Group and an opportunity from The Product Review Place.

If you don't know who Michael Psilakis is, you might have seen him on Food Network. He also won the 2008 Food & Wine Best Chef award for redefining Greek cooking in America.

My Review:

The initial look of the book is magnificent. It's a large book (three pounds) with a rare cover to the book outside of the jacket. I have noticed most books only contain the print on the jacket while the book is left bare. The photography is very inviting and draws you in. To me, it was not just a recipe book but a family journal of inspirational ideas with a feel for getting to know who Michael was and is.

This cookbook is more than a cookbook as it's a collection of recipes on memories, emotions and insights that transpired throughout Michael's childhood and early adolescence. The forward section thoroughly explains the recipes and how to follow them which I found very helpful as I'm a novice Greek cook. His offerings of short cuts and optional steps/ingredients is a nice touch as you elevate up the level of being a true Greek chef.

If you aren't too familiar with ingredients used in Greek recipes, he does a superb job with describing them and providing the substitutes.

For the recipe I chose, which was difficult as there were so many wonderful choices, I went with Souvlaki: Chicken and Pork Shish Kebab. It looked AMAZING and mouth watering good!

I will forwarn you that the recipes are not simple or at least the one's I looked at. They take time to read and understand and to coordinate what you need to purchase. I photocopies the pages I needed as there was the main recipe but I also needed items for the Greek Salad, Ladolemono and Tsatziki. All in all, it was a labored event so ensure you have the time to put forward in creating this masterpiece.

This meal was FANTASTIC and definitely worth the time it took to make. If you love or even like Greek food and have even a small desire to cook, this book is for you!

My Review:

Hachette Books provided this opportunity to review Permission Slips and I will admit that I don't watch The View nor have ever heard of Sherri. I read the book and immediately laughed both inside at times and outside as she's genuinely made me laugh at her humor and the accuracy on so much of what she wrote about. Although she has had to endure disappointment and pain, like us all, she brings the humor out and allows you to relate to her experiences. It was more touching for me because I had been there and the things she wrote about were spot on.

The title of the book is the theme as it's really a creative way to handle life and the guilt women in particular apply to themselves at all levels. The fact that Sherri tunes into the differences between how men and women react and feel was an eye opener to allow myself to know I'm not alone. She tackles probably one of the biggest issues women endure and that's guilt. If you want to laugh, find sympathy and enjoy the ability to relate to another woman and feel good about it, read Permission Slips. Allowing yourself excuses every now and then is a great idea.

I would highly recommend this book not only to women but to men. I think it's a good book to show men how women are truly different and why we are different. Her examples are witty, downright correct and allows you to overcome and rise above.

I had the fortunate opportunity from Thomas Nelson Books to read Voices of the Faithful Book Two: Inspiring Stories of Courage from Christians Serving Around the World compiled and monthly introductions by Kim P. Davis and series creator and introduction by Beth Moore.

Each day provided a new prayer and a devotional reading as told by various missionaries around the world. I liked the concept of the book but would have liked perhaps a lengthier version of each story that was told. To hold the book to one devotional a day, limited the length and perhaps in some instances, the quality of the message.

Instead of reading this book over the span of days, I would have preferred to devote a day for a couple of the readings to allow it to sink in. The messages are well written, provided insight into other worlds and gave encouragement to the Christian faith. It's an excellent resource to see what people endure for the sake of their beliefs and religion. All the contributers have one goal, one mission which is to share in the teachings of the Christian faith.

I personally feel this is not a book to be taken lightly to read. I think a good faith is ideal for being able to want to read this book. It is enlightening but to me, enlightening to the right audience.

My two girls literally fought over the book and both wanted it. The bigger one won so now I have to buy one for the little one. I have to admit that this is a great family book to start or continue a Christmas tradition with. The illustrations are rich and colorful yet have an old fashion appearance. No review can do the animation justice as it's really innovative. At first you think it's a hologram type image but you quickly learn that as you move the page, the animation comes to life.

This is a superb book particularly for women who feel they are in a rut, need a change or just need more. This book is a coaching exercise to identifying what is needed in your life to make changes to reach a goal of happiness. Marcus is excellent in providing the tools to unlock the keys that will bring fulfillment, peace and control.

What makes the book more valuable is the usage of real women and their plights. This extra care to details allows a variety of women to relate to them and it shows the path forward or it shows how they could have found the path forward. This book's timing was perfect for my situation as I look to find what is missing and what will increase my quality of life.

I also found the statistics interesting such as the increasing number of unhappiness among women in general since the 1970's. Marcus has an ability to understand and provide examples on how to beat the odds. He also breaks down different domains in your life and provides useful tips in improving those areas whether it's your children, your career, your relationships and so forth. It's a very well rounded book that I would highly recommend to any women regardless of emotional and physical happiness.

Marcus has spent his career helping individuals discover and capitalize on their personal strengths. Christian Siriano Fierce Style How to Be Your Most Fabulous Self Book Review

If you don't know who Christian Siriano is, he was the 2008 (Season Four) Project Runway winner. Winning Project Runway is a big deal for those in the fashion world but the bigger feat is the fact he's only 21 years old.

Hachette Book Group provided a free copy of Christian's book for my review. This opportunity was provided by the Product Review Place. The book is broken down into four sections chock full of useful tips for all women:

Lady, You Look Fabulous!!!! This section is helpful tips in finding your personal styles and what to do as well as what not to do! For example, he says to not wear UGG boots and I'm right there with him! He advised on how to find your own signature style. His tips are spot on such as if you are large breasted, you should try to elongate your top half. I was really surprised as he does know what looks good and what doesn't and he's not just catering to stick women.
Finding Your Inner Ferocia is a nice section on finding yourself. He explains how the clothes is only one aspect of what makes you fierce. It's really a great breakdown on confidence, self-esteem and just finding out how to love yourself. There is much more in this section that you have to read it to find out!
Every Day is a Runway...Work It is about taking chances, finding yourself, confronting change and again, much more is included in this section. There really is good, sensible tips throughout the entire book. For example, what you can do with five valuable minutes and he uses the example of knowing where you put the keys so you don't have to spend five minutes looking for them and missing a traffic light later thus throwing off your whole day. Every minute does count!
Inspire Me is the ending to a complete package of hints, tips and inspiration to get to the total fierce you. For someone so young, he really has invaluable, sensible solutions to become the person you might want to become.

You don't have to be flamboyant or a super model to be fierce. All it takes is practical sense, confidence and some good inspiration. Christian is a prime example of a success story and this is a must read if you want a boost or are in the fashion industry or just want to be entertained as he's a showman!

I never heard of Robin Meade until I received an offer from Hachette Book Group to read about this popular TV woman, Robin Meade and her journy to conquor anxiety and self confidence issues. To see such a beautiful woman admit she suffers issues of confidence was amazing to me. Reading her book left you with a sense of "wow, this is really one down to earth, funny person." Robin provides a background of where she started, the values instilled in her and how she never forgot them. She also enlightens you on where "Morning Sunshine!" came from.

Robin is the Headline News morning anchor who worked hard to be in the position she has. She's a fighter and she's real. She introduces her four step approach to building confidence and she is proof it works. Robin has a natural warmth and an inviting personality.

Robin adds so much laughter in the book by being able to make fun of herself that you find her real and you catch yourself wanting to read more about her. She tells of a time in the 8th grade where she was jump roping on stage with holiday garland. Unknown to her, the hem of her skirt was lifting up and exposing her "bum" for all to see. Even then, she handled it with grace and dignity and was able to laugh about it.

I think the book is very appealing because others can easily relate to what Robin is stating and have also experienced a lot of what she has. Being able to relate to your author, makes the reading experience more enjoyable and it has more of an impact. Not to repeat, she's beautiful, witty and intelligent.

Great book that I would recommend naturally to Robin Meade fans as well as anyone suffering from confidence and anxiety issues. This is a must for women as you will help see you are not alone and you can overcome these obstacles.

The Gorilla on the Swing by Jamie Bacigalupo Book Review

This delightful children's book is written by a very creative six year old. The illustrations were all by her and the story is based on her two sister's names. The adventures of Dani the Gorilla involve the usage of kindergarten sight words to help those entering kindergarten to read a fun book written by a peer.

What is unique about the author is she has epilepsy and her creativity is stifled at times due to the medication. She struggles in school with remembering things but her creativity has not dwindled.

It's a cute and charming little book and is available to purchase for $7.50.

I had the great opportunity to read Light Up Your Child's Mind by Joseph Renzulli, PhD and Sally Reis, PhD. I took an interest in reading this book mostly because I have three children at home. They range in ages from 2 to 21 so I wanted to see if there was anything I could have done differently to invoke some creativity in the oldest one's mind. I've grown myself since those early days with her so I can look back and reflect on what I can offer and provide both from a more mature level as well as from a resource perspective.

I encourage the creativity in my children mostly because I'm creative myself or at least I like to think I am! Talking to my dad today, I learned that I got it from him and they got it from me most likely. My middle child is currently pursuing writing, acting and many other artsy type hobbies. She's a natural and where she lacks in memory (I think due to epilepsy medications), she gains in having a wonderful ability to create almost anything.

What I liked about the book is what many parents, I would think, don't realize and that is that schools are so busy building, teaching and sticking to assigned schedules and requirements that they don't have the time to tap into each child's unique interests and desires. This is by no means the fault of the schools but as parents, we have the ability to show our children the way through many opportunities. It provides direction in how to guide your child versus pushing and directing their interests. It gives suggestions on how to spark an interest and how to pursue the interests.

I think we all remember the kid in school that had the most incredible looking projects and you knew their parents helped if not created the entire project. This method advocates tapping into the source by instilling excitement and interest without pushing.

I highly recommend this book as a great way to educate yourself on how to spur creativity in your child. It's a great resource to teach both you and your children on how to tap into the hidden passions and carry forward in a healthy, productive manner.

The Review:

The book takes a biblical approach when teaching men and women to understand how a husband and a wife fit together in a marriage. At first, I had the sense that this was a book that emphasized a need of the wife to succumb to the husband's wishes and commands. As I kept reading through the different chapters and tests, it became so amazingly clear where he was coming from and how it applied to every marriage.

Dr. Eggerich has a keen ability to understand the differences in men and women by using such phrases as "blue glasses" and "pink glasses" or "blue hearing aids" and "pink hearing aids." It was nice reading the excerpts he provided from real couples to see that I wasn't alone in the struggle of making it all fit together and work. The excerpts validated what he was teaching and showed that the exercises/tests he provides each to do, in fact work.

I ended up taking the principles and used some of the tests and have found that it truly is effective. I am a believer in this book for anyone. Whether you are in a relationship or not, the book teaches invaluables aspects of what men and women, in general, crave and need while discussing how you can give to the other while receiving what you need.

The whole concept of love and respect are fully discussed and thoughtfully introduced in a way that opens ones eyes and will lead to a better relationship.

The one thing I would have liked to have seen, is a more of an emphasis of how to handle marriages when there is a breakdown on fairness of household chores/children. He noted a good example of a wife not wanting to break from doing a chore to sit and watch TV with her husband due to the "to do list" she still has to do. I think that a lot of marital discord evolves around not only money but how the wife tends to work full time and still tends to the house and children full time. Perhaps if the "Crazy Cycle" is broken and the wife gives the husband his needed respect, the husband will come around to help more because he will be willing to show more of his love.

All in all, I highly recommend this book!

He Who Sings Last by Lisa Laird DiRosso Book Review

I was given the opportunity to read Lisa Laird DiRosso’s debut novel He Who Sings Last. I was eager to read this book as I prefer crime and mystery novels given my background and experience in law. The main character, Jimmy Covelli, is an aging, down on his luck former singer of a popular band from the 80’s. There are many characters that come in and out of the story and the author does a great job in providing a good history on the characters, personalities and the relationships as it relates to the story and each other. One of the main characters, Miranda Madison, a fan of Jimmy’s from the past, provides some reader’s the ability to reminiscent about their teen idols as well as the realization how far some people will go to have love.

Understanding Jimmy’s decline and struggles with aging was easy to relate to as I suspect anyone could feel the pain of losing their youth especially someone who could get any woman in his day. Jimmy’s character is further revealed to have some skeletons in the closet with unexpected twists. Another main character, a police detective named John Vintoni, leads the path to uncover the truth behind a murder that was committed and unsolved in 1983. The author provides a good insight into the minds of Jimmy and Detective Vintoni and how they work against one another. Detective Vintoni is committed and nearly obsessed with solving this crime to the point where you aren’t sure you should feel sorry for him or revel in his need to find justice.

The story centers around Jimmy and his manipulative ways and Detective Vintoni’s pursuit to bring justice to the person who committed the murder 19 year’s ago. I found that there was almost too many details on all the characters but I understood the author’s point with trying to weave them altogether. I tried to anticipate the outcome as I kept reading and particularly enjoyed the very accurate court room dialogue. Given my experience with court rooms, the author was very accurate which made it more enjoyable.

Throughout the latter half of the book, I kept anticipating the who done it answer and was left with an interesting ending! I would recommend this book and if you like Sherlock Holmes type stories, this one has the mystery and the criminal components that keeps you reading to the end.
